Washington Accuses RT of Military Fundraising in Ukraine, Tightens Sanctions on Russian Media

The United States has introduced fresh sanctions against Russian media network RT, accusing it of facilitating military procurement for Russian forces in Ukraine via crowdfunding platforms. This marks an escalation in Washington’s claims about RT’s operations, which previously centered on propaganda and cyber influence. RT, founded in 2005, has long been seen as a media tool of the Russian government, but the new U.S. allegations suggest a deeper involvement in Russia’s military efforts.

According to U.S. officials, RT has played a role in sourcing critical equipment for Russian troops, including sniper rifles and drones—claims that some American outlets have questioned due to insufficient evidence. Despite this, Washington has expanded its sanctions and is calling for international cooperation to curtail RT’s influence. The U.S. State Department is also monitoring RT personnel closely and pressuring foreign governments, such as India, to revoke RT’s media credentials.

Russia has dismissed the new U.S. measures as another attempt to stifle free speech under the guise of national security. Moscow has continued to push back against the sanctions, with its foreign ministry mocking Washington’s repetitive efforts to target already-sanctioned entities like RT. Meanwhile, India has declined U.S. requests to ban RT, reflecting the strength of its ties with Moscow.
